The reported figures for rape are quite high and still most cases of rape go unreported.
I read a news article about rape and in the news article was a story of a repeat and well known offender…an 85yr old man. He went to jail for just 3yrs for raping a 9yr old and years later, he was arrested for raping another 9yr old.
The law will do what it can but should we let it get to that?
Most rape cases go unreported because of stigma mostly revolving around cultural issues and social acceptance. The stigma should be on the perpetrators not the victims but this is not so in our society.
What is your attitude to rape victims and their families? Do we so often think in self righteousness that they deserved it? That they were stupid or naive or whatever else?
Whether its the rape of a child or an adult, rape is a heinous crime that should not be swept under the rug. Neither should we condone, negotiate with or try to understand the circumstances. There is no rationalization or justification for it.
Rape is Rape and it is an act against humanity…the right understanding and outrage/disgust/intolerance…will help us hold offenders accountable for their actions and may deter others from committing such crime. Showing compassion and changing the culture where the victim is blamed or stigmatized might help them deal with the trauma and make more people come forward and report this crime so that it can be dealt with and eradicated from our society.
Rape has no place in a healthy and safe nation!
The stigma causes the female folks to keep it as a secret. I suggest a death penalty for every rapist caught!!! this will also help reduce the cirme as long as Nija is concerned they only behave if there is punishment awaiting!!!
